What is an association?

A sports association acts as the backbone for a sport. It is typically run by volunteers and aims to put in place guidance and regulations for clubs, teams and groups of the sport.
It's primary mission is the steady and controlled growth of the sport, which is something bocking is completely lacking at present.
Without this in place, there will never be anything more than regional groups meeting up or hiring halls for gym sessions. There is of course nothing wrong with that and we hope it will continue at the fast pace it is already however there is already a need to have coaches for the sports, qualifications, a grading system or a process to formally recognise achievement for the bockers and eventually meeting the requirements to apply for sports funding.

An association can help support bockers right across the country. This may be with insurance, risk assessments, safety requirements, meeting places, sponsorship and so on. It makes a lot more sense to do this collectively, on a national level than for small groups to do it on a trial and error basis.
This way, everyone is working towards the same goal and doing so in very much the same way with the best possible practices which is vital for the growth of powerbocking.

Nobody needs to be a part of an association. Take skating and skateboarding for example. The average skaters on the street are probably not even aware of skating associations. I expect the vast majority are not even part of a club or team and they just skate recreationally as a hobby. The same applies to bocking.
