not bad for a first try i guess Tongue, are you planning on using anything else to support the structure or is it gonna be completely out of gaffa?

completely out of gaffer if it can hold it. We'll see how the larger scale prototypes go. IF we need anything to help with the structure its likely to be wire or thin wooden dowels. If we need help with floatation then probs thin polystyrene or pvc tubes.

this actually sounds like it could work, how big are you actually planning on making it? Are you thinking like a small float or as big as some of the airplane circular life float things that you can get?

This is the basic design I have in my head but I think as we move forward we'll learn a lot and change what doesnt work.

It's basically 2 long boards, almost like canoes attached at the centre. The red dots are where people would go, however the middle person may add too much weight to the whole craft.
Each board is going to be boat shaped (V shaped) which will be put together using wooden dowel struts and insulation foam which should add some bouyancy. The longer and thinner the boards are, the faster they will move in the water. I'm totally staying away from simply getting some water barrels and tieing them together because they are dead slow and fall apart.
This is obviously just a rough sketch and things will change as we progress.

I know, which is something we will overcome. How hard can it be?

The guy from gaffer tape.com emailed me today and i've told him that I simply dont have the time to design and build a boat with everything else on my plate at the moment.

If anyone else is interested in taking the lead with this project then let me know asap. Assuming nobody does, we wont be entering.

no lol. Kelseys dad first mentioned it to us and then we came up with the idea of a gaffer boat. I still firmly beleive it can be done and would be spectacular for us and gaffertape but I dont have time to get it done Sad
