Hey Neil and welcome to the forum
The best tip for you I suppose would be to wear safety equipment from the start to save your self from uneccesary injuries. Falling from running can hurt quite bad without the safety equipment.
You could spend a couple of pounds on wrist guards, but these don't offer as much protection as the quality deteriorates quite fast and the plastic guards tend to slip out quite ease. You could on the other hand spend up to £30 on a pair that could be the same type of quality. I'm not really a big fan of wrist guards (but i should be wearing them) so I wouldn't be able to help you much there but any pair would be better than no pair I say.

As for running, it can be very hard and i guess you will have to spend a lot of time on your stilts if you would want to run far on them. Running on stilts can be quite hard( I could never run as far on stilts as I do on foot).
But with practice and enough fitness training you should be able to train yourself into running as far as you would find comfortable.

Hope I helped a bit, I can talk on about random things as time but I guess you'll get use to it
